The winter season varies considerably from region to region in the United States. In the South (the southern tier of states) bees will be gathering pollen and nectar. In the North (the upper tier of states) temperatures can get quite cold and blizzards are not unusual. Very little bee activity in those states. However, in those upper tier states, it may be possible to have days when a hive of bees can be checked to see if the bees are alive. Do not pull frames from any hive if the temperature is lower than 60º F. Inner covers can be removed to check for bee activity. Outside frames can be removed if no bees are on them. Pulling frames of bees from the hive during cold weather is not wise. |
